Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father had left the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mom, grandmother as well as godparents. As a young infant, Ford struggled with anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by the word association. Ford began performing in her teens, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one few weeks, she realized it was not the right fit for her. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place after her third try made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of Ford's classmates. Ford didn't graduate until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate was also a regular performer as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her set in 1996, soon gained her admiration.
